Food For Flare-ups

When you have inflammation in the digestive tract, it is more difficult and in severe cases, impossible to digest food. Of course, there are foods that encourage recovery (unfortunately not many), and food that will cause further irritation and inflammation. This list is a guide that might work for you.

 

Foods to eat during a flare up

Wild salmon (not farmed)

Probiotic yoghurt (if you’re not avoiding dairy)

Organic eggs, scrambled and well cooked

Instant organic oatmeal

Carrots – cooked well

High calorie liquid formulas such as ‘Ensure’

Mashed bananas

Skinless potatoes

Ripe mashed avocado

Organic brown rice

 

Food to avoid during a flare up

Sugar of any type – even naturally occurring sugars like those found in honey

Soda of any type – even sugar free versions

High fibre food

Hot or spicy food

Alcohol

Fruit juice or smoothies

Legumes and beans

Coffee and Tea

Dairy (if you’re lactose intolerant)

High fibre stringy veg – Onions, Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, celery, etc.

Whole seeds

Nuts

Corn

Mushrooms

Fatty meats

High fat condiments such as mayonnaise
